Subject:Japanese Samurai Pressed Metal Plates
Posted By: Dave Thu, Jan 18, 2007 IP: 86.42.166.226

Hi , Could someone please help me with these plates , they are pressed soft metal and I presume were exported from Japan ca1890-1900 ?

There are a number of symbols I would imagine have a message , as a wild uneducated guess could these have been produced as wedding gifts , perhaps capturing a traditional historic scene , or simply a fashionable Oriental item for the period within Europe ?

Imari type flowers , Samurai Warriors with bow and arrow and swords , the one on horseback has a small dragon's head upon his headress , a pentagram star symbol within a circle , fans , dragons perhaps water dragons ?? , ivy and other climbing flora .

Thanks in advance , Dave.

These two plates/bowls measure almost 10" , they are made of metal which shines a silver color when scratched hard , one plate is split and the gilding is mostly worn away , the metal bends quite easily and will bend back without splitting , it is not magnetic !

The reverse has a shiny silver finish with I think brush stroke marks , there is some green oxidization though I am not sure if this was left within a cleaning liquid when used .

Black appears to be applied over the gilt decoration .

Plates are quite heavy at just over 550 grms , the one in better condition is 25 grms heavier .

The design is very proud and they are concave , I suppose they are almost bowls !
