Subject:Jade Seal
Posted By: Wai Kong Chui Sun, Feb 04, 2007 IP: 66.131.83.188

Dear Sir,

My nephrite jade seal measures 1-18" square and 2-1/4" long. I was told it is some sort of official Transportation seal. Since is made from nephrite, does it necessarily mean it was for high ranking office? Also, what period was it made/used?

Thank you,

KC

Dear KC,

Seals were more often of soapstone than of jade.

They can be impossible to date if very simple.

If you were to post photos, someone might have a suggestion as to possible time period.

Best regards,
Judy

Hi, KC:

Is there a picture of your seal? How did you determine it was made of nephrite?

Dear Wai

It is made of white nephrite, it does not indicate that it once belonged to court officers, emperors..etc, but the workmanship that counts. Some high rank officers and/or Emperors have handy bronze seals, shoushan stone, ivory, hard wood etc...

Pls show the picture, I am a big fan of Chinease jade art.
