Subject:A qianlong iron red jar ?
Posted By: William Sat, Mar 17, 2007 IP: 86.219.227.68

Hi,

This is a small iron-red and gilt jar, flanked at the shoulders by a pair of moulded lion-head masks, painted around the globular body with two peacocks and an abundance of leaves. This pattern is above a band of large lotus petals. The base is unglazed.
Height: 2 in
Medium diameter: 2 9/16 in

What is your opinion about this fine jar (a qianlong japanese pattern jar ?)
Thanks !

William

The birds not peacocks but phenixes, poorly drawn.

Fast-brushed decoration, poor foot and mouth finish, bright orange looks underglaze?, cracked base unglazed, brown-red wash maybe added to make look older.

Shining perfect glaze and above things tell modern factory product of kitchen jar. Not Japanese design.

General book or two Chinese ceramics, authors Sato, Vainker or Valenstine not expensive, can get used, show good quality. Also web sites Palace Museum Beijing, National Palace Museum Taipei Taiwan, Metropolitan Museum New York, Victoria and Albert Museum England, many others show good quality to compare.

Good luck,
Cal
