Subject:Marked Netzuke
Posted By: Tim Seaward Tue, Mar 20, 2007 IP: 82.37.202.75

Hi,
Can anyone tell me anything about this netzuke?
What does it depict? What does the mark say?
How old is it? Does it have any value?
Thanks
Tim

If the white mark with signature is part of the surrounding material, I would guess that it could be a Tagua nut carving.

To me the sig appears to be an insert into the netsuke.

I'm a bit concerned over the lack of a fine, high finish on the material (dull patina, knife marks, excess grain, chips around the holes, etc.), which appears to be wood, but not one I recognize as being commonly used as netsuke.

Those are Chinese Netzuke replica. This explain the low gross finish and lack of details. The wood is probably from the Mahogany family and are sold at about 20 to 50$ in Chinese market (often pass to the tourist as original)...

Now that I look closer, it does look like mahogany.
