Subject:Help indentifying japanese print
Posted By: tim edwards Sun, Apr 29, 2007 IP: 195.128.250.109

I recently found this print in my brothers attic and I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this print.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Tim

Are you sure it is a print?

What are the dimensions? What kind of mount (if any)? Can you show the back of the print?

The signature and seal read In Chinese Mei Bang; in Japanese BI HO, both generally meaning "beautiful country".

The aesthetic appears to me to be Japanese, but many Chinese painters of the Lingnan school studied in Japan, or were influenced by artists who had. The shape (squareish) may indicate a 20th century date.

The signature (and seal)reads "Yoshikuni" (美邦). This could be the Meiji artist Ky Yoshikuni (Yoshikuni II, 1855-1830), but his name was written in a different way (芳国) and certainly not to be confounded with the famous Osaka artist Yoshikuni Toyokawa (active 1813-1840). The attribution of your print to this artist is for this reason uncertain. I searched in Japanese websites for this particular name and found just one print (a sugoroku board print) by an Meiji artist using the same signature
The print itself is a late example of a "surimono" or privately issued print. The subject of a flying bat against the full moon was earlier depicted in "surimono" by artists such as Toyota Hokkei.

I just found the correct artist. See an example of the signature at link below.
It is 'Hirose Biho' (also spelled 'Yoshikuni' in an alternative way), active ca 1900-1910. He designed mainly war prints ('senso-e') during the Russian-Japanese conflict of 1904-05.

Very nice print by an uncommon Meiji artist.
