Subject:Monkey King, Magic Boat Kuan Yin
Posted By: Dorothea Mon, May 21, 2007 IP: 68.9.189.46

Hello, I have a porcelain lamp from the Republic period that has two ladies and a monkey riding in a boat carved from a tree. I am familiar with the story of the "Monkey King" and aslo the "Magic Boat" but this does not seem to fit. Does anyone know what this scene depicts other than the obvious two ladies and a monkey riding in a boat. My opinion is it is Kuan Yin and an attendant...the attendant is fishing and the boat is filled with pomegrantes or some sort of fruit. Interesting to know if there is a Chinese folk tale or other piece of literature that this might come from.

It may also be Xi Wang Mu, Since there are peaches in boat?? I do recall a story where Monkey steals peaches from Xi Wang Mu and is punished....dont recall how.
