Subject:Japanese porcelain chamber pot
Posted By: Robert Stewart Wed, Jul 11, 2007 IP: 88.107.127.205

I am grateful to Robert Yellin for referring me to this site.
I have bought a Japanese chamber pot in England: can anybody please tell me anything about it - its origin, age or even whether it is worth much? It is beautifully painted in enamel, with "gold leaf" effect gold paint. I cannot trace the kiln mark on the internet, so any information would be interesting. Thank you. Regards, Rob stewart

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your pot de chambre is Chinese not Japanese, and most probably of post 1950s manufacture.

This illustration is most certainly of a Japanese scene, but the stamped mark clearly reads Zhong Guo Zhi Zao - Made in China.

The Guo character is written in the simplified form, which would generally indicate a data after 1956.

This is a modern Chinese made pot with only decorative value. The base marks says
"Made in China".
