Subject:Is crackle in black lacquer a sign of age in 12' x 3' wall panel?

I have an 8-panel mother-of-pearl and ivory (?) piece that
my mother purchase in the Orient 20 years ago. It has fine lines
all over it. I notice that this design is being produced inexpensively today. Is this crackle a sign of age? If so, any idea on the age?

Dianne,

Its really hard to tell from the photos - you would need closer shots to be able to tell for sure. However, black laquer is often wet-sanded with a fine sandpaper and the lines you are seeing may just be from that.

This might be of interest to you - particularly since we have a sections devoted specifically to laquers and how they are created. We have launched a new blog about the chinese antique & reproduction furnitures industry. The link is: http://www.acf-china.com/blog/
