Hello. I recently discovered this book in a wealthy estate here in upstate ny. It is a fold out book, has a letter in it stating it was passed down through family and givin as a wedding gift. Its in great shape. I am looking to get it appraised however dont know where to start? I am in Upstate NY near Rochester.

Wes,

Contact a reputable auction house. See the section about Complimentary Appraisals at the bottom of the web page below, for example.

Just a few comments:

1) The artistic quality of the prints is not great. The scenes show people only. There is no background surrounding them. I didn't bid on a set of oban sized prints very similar to these because they didn't meet my criteria for artistry.

2) Given the colors and style, I'd put these in the Meiji era circa 1900.

I haven't seen a lot of these shunga books come to market but a "gut feel" estimate of value would put it in the less than $500 range.

Cheers,
Stan
