Subject:Coiled knob Basket, Asian African, Native American?
Posted By: Todd Sun, Oct 21, 2007 IP: 216.228.180.189

I bought this because it seemed to have an old feel and look to it. I am not sure if it is Asian African, Native American, Chinese etc. I apologize if I am wasting time on this one. Just don't even know where to look for info on this. If it is two days old and worthless I apologize. Though I still like the basket. Any advice or info always appreciated.

Dear Todd

It is possible an african coiled sweetgrass basket, maby be made in USA. Pls look at the strings that tied up the grass, if they are made of plastic they are surely few years ago.

The coil basketry is one of the oldest crafts of African origin in America dating back from West African civilization.

You can google by using keyword "sweetgrass basket".

I do not know about the value.

Have fun

These are very well-made and durable baskets.

They don't look very old! There have been a lot of imports of Africian ethnic items to the U.S. in the last 15 years.
