Subject:19th Century Carved Rhinocerous Horn
Posted By: ppettit Fri, Feb 22, 2008 IP: 205.188.116.14

What type of market exists for carved rhino horn at the present time? Is it sought after by collectors?
Is it safe to use mineral oil to restore its luster?

If it is a genuine 19th century carved rhino horn it is worth a lot of money. Best bet is to take it to Sothebys or christies for authentication, if authentic it can worth and where between 10 thousand to a 100 thousand us dollars. There may be legal requirement to export or import such items. Good luck.

It is best not to mess around with the luster. Mineral oil may damage the organice texture of the horn. Try to use something like a compressed air can for photography to blow the dust or a hand-held mini vacum with a hairy tip for computer to suck up the dust. A slightly wet all-cotton towel may be okay to wipe clean the flat surfaces(squeeze the towel real dry). Make sure don't make the item wet because it may cause fractures in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to advise me on the proper care/cleaning of this beautiful horn.
