Subject:Needs help on a pair of blue cloisonne vases
Posted By: Bill Mon, Mar 17, 2008 IP: 208.63.180.117

I would appreciate very much if somebody who know cloisonne would give their opinions on this pair of blue cloisonne vases regarding their:

(1) ages;
(2) their approximate sales value;
(3) their artistic values (good or bad?)

Each vase is about 6.0" T x 3.6" W

The pair weighs about 420 gram.

Thank you in advance.

Bill

They look mid 20th c.
Made for the export market....don't really have the qualities of fine cloisonne.
$20-30 for the pair is my guess.

Dear Bill,

These appear to be Chinese vases made for the export market, and may date from around the 1920s (though possibly later). They appear to be of a good quality and conditiontypical of that time, and well cared-for (or unused). I would value them at $50. each. I agree with Tim that the are not 'great art,' but they are decent work.

Hi, Tim and Jamey:

Much obliged for your assistance. I did not expect too much for them but glad to learn at least they are not modern.

Would you please take a look at this pair of RED cloisonne vases which are much bigger and finer (in my novice opinion) than the blue ones:

Thanks in advance.

Bill you said, "glad to learn at least they are not modern."

While "old" may be a matter of opinion, these definitely are 'modern' by comparison with examples from the Ming Dynasty.

I personally would share Tim's estimation of time period.

The vases at your link, posted March 17, 2008, would be about the same age (less than 40 years old), though you can see that the motif quality is less clumsy. The link provided there would have valuable comments.

Either pair would not be out of place in a department store or tourist shop today. They may have had stickers to label place of origin.

Good luck,
Cal
