Subject:Asian wood sculpture
Posted By: Jim Morgan Mon, Mar 31, 2008 IP: 12.213.224.36 This is a piece my grandfather bought in SE Asia I believe sometime in the first half of the 1900's it has no markings of an artist on it, and looks to be carved from a single piece of wood, any ideas what it is, and its value?? |

From my knowledge of such wooden pieces I think it is maximum 50 years old. The workmanship is excellent, however collectors of such art are few and far flung and I would appraise it at $200-250. |

There are two naga (dragon/snake like figures), so perhaps it has something to do with the characters Subali and Sugriwa (who are Hanuman's uncles). They were royalty whose appearance turned into ape-like figures because they plunged into a river that they were forbidden to enter. The story is popular in Bali. |
