Subject:Artifact found metal detecting
Posted By: Maggie Sat, May 17, 2008 IP: 24.69.202.207

My husband found this item metal detecting in Canada in an area that was primarily used for military activity from the late 1800's to 1950, then remained derelict/dormant and then was converted to a public park. It is located by the Ocean.

It appears to be brass based on the condition the metal is in. It is around the thickness of a quarter, maybe 6 inches tall. There are some detail carvings/markings on the front, nothing on the back.

He was lucky enough to find the other piece, but I did not take a photo of that yet because it was found later.

It has been very mysterious and we are hoping to be able to discover what it was!

Thank you kindly for any assistance you may be able to offer.

Well the center medallion is "shao" symbol which is a popular decorative pattern widely used. When you put the other piece together, is the opposite side to the top pointy side, flat? If it is, it might have been a book holder. You know the thing you put at the end of a stack of books on the shelf to prevent them from flopping over.
