Subject:Please help to appraise for two Oval Miniature oil paintings
Posted By: Andrew Sat, Jun 07, 2008 IP: 220.114.22.218

The two oval miniature paintings are being collected by me.

I would like to know who is the artist painted the two oval miniature paintings and it would be possible to help me to learn how much the value about the two paintings is, but I am not sure if the media of the paintings is oil, watercolour or egg tempera, but I guarantee that the paintings were hand painted but not poster even the surface on the painting is very smooth, no heavy strokes.

Media of the painting: oil/watercolour/Egg Tempera ???

Conditions: Painting is framed with ivory and tortoiseshell and carved by convex lenses or glass

Size: 11cm x 7.8cm

Your kind assistance for the appraisal will be very much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Andrew

Andrew,

Your miniatures are of Louis XVI of France and his wife, Marie Antoinette. They are identified by the writing on the newspaper scraps: Antoinette and Louis 16.

The one of Louis is after a portrait by Joseph Siffred Duplessis. You can see a photo of this at wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XVI

The painter's name may be the one you show as 'signature' but of course there is no guarantee that the same person wrote that name as did the original portrait.

You need an in-person appraisal of these works.

The subjects and newspaper pieces would have been strong clues that these items have nothing to Asian art, the subject of this message board and of the Forum.

Good luck,
Cal
