Subject:Green Dragon Yellow Ground Plate
Posted By: Kenneth Wed, Jun 25, 2008 IP: 167.10.240.1

Hello,

Recently I have purchased this small plate, 2.1/4"D X 1.1/4"H with a Guangxu reign mark.

Qs:Is this an Imperial Mark & Period? What is the fair market value? Please comment.

Thank you so much,

Kenneth

Similar to lot 185 sale 2786 Christies Amsterdam, 20- 21 May 2008. Sold for 2500Euro inclusive of buyers premuim, a pair. Size 13.5cm. However with so many perfect imperial replicas in the China art market it is hard to tell if your is genuine by looking at the pics, but they do look good. I suggest very enthusiastic porcelain collectors should invest in portable optical microscopes to study the glaze of item- eg bubble sizes and inclusions.

Kenneth your piece does look genuine from the seal mark on the pics. Such sancai pieces have a rainbow sheen when view from the side near a light source. Actually your piece does look very similar to the piece from Christies Amsterdam. May be your dealer could have bought them from there ask him the source. Such guangxu mark pieces were very common and cheap till recently. 10 years ago they were worth less than 100 euro a piece at antique shops, so I suspect they are probably genuine.

The unusual rim makes me think this is a new piece, therefore not Guangxu M&P & only decorative value.

Phil.

There are Guangxu plates with rounded scallop rims like yours, I saw some at Christies Amsterdam, Asian art sale last month. May be look out Christies.com and type in guangxu mark plates in the search column under past sales. If I was not wrong they sold for hammer price 2000 Euros for a pair.

Another clue.... Emperial dragons normally have five claws.

Arjan,

FYI, these photos did not show clearly, those dragons are five-clawed dragons.

Thanks

Sorry Kenneth. I looked at the Left upper leg and counted only four claws but..... I also saw the saucers at Christies Amsterdam and have the cataloque. The saucers (13,5 cm)are, as far as I can see, totally the same... also (and very important I think) the writing of the caracters is the same (I can see it better in my cataloque than on internet). The two did 2500,-. So I lost my reservations.
