Subject:Black Nippon Pottery Candlestick Holder with relief Dragon design
Posted By: James Wilson Tue, Jul 08, 2008 IP: 24.25.231.49

I have this piece of Black Nippon Pottery Candle Holder with relief Dragon. It is signed/marked with a signature/maker's mark, but I do not know what it says. Can anyone here translate it for me, or possibly refer me to someone that can? I will include what little information I have on the piece below. If anyone can add anything else, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

James

Just a date note...

My references say the use of "Made in ..." started (by law) in 1914 as did the use by the Japanese of "Nippon" for marking. In 1921 the Customs Bureau disallowed the use of the term "Nippon" and required items be marked with "Japan". Assuming this piece conformed, that dates it between 1914 and 1921.

Cheers,
Stan
