Subject:chinese painting scroll and large buddhist painting
Posted By: Martin Schultz Sun, Oct 12, 2008 IP: 82.113.121.16

Hi,
a few years ago i bought these two paintings, a chinese painting scroll and a possibly tibetan
painting on cloth. The chinese painting is paper on a paper mounting, measuring ca 200x80 cm.
The tibetan painting measures ca 200x145 cm.
Any information as to age or origin would be very appreciated.
Thanks inadvance,

Martin Schultz

Hi Martin, the painting is indeed Chinese, falsely inscribed as by Ming painter Qiu Ying. In the past it has been common to pass off anonymous works as the works of old masters by adding false signatures and seals. There are also just plain fakes. My guess is that this is a fairly recent work in the latter category, though it's possible it's a 20th century work also meant to deceive. The Tibetan piece looks very attractive, but I don't have the knowledge to comment

Thanks a lot for your very helpful comment on the scroll painting!
For the tibetan painting i should probably send a message to the forum.

Regards,

Martin Schultz
