Subject:HELP WITH VASE!!!!
Posted By: KELLY Sun, Feb 01, 2009 IP: 64.12.116.14

If anyone has any info to offer on this vase I would appreciate. It's beautiful and i love it. Here are the pics. This vase also has the crackle affect to it but you can't see it in the pics. The bottom stamp says "NOT FOR FOODD" (either two D's or a D and a U)with two exclamation points that curl like backwards question marks then "MAY POISON FOOD". Also, as you can see, it has the number 24 on it with another black mark but some is faded and also to the side is a green 7 or L not sure which. Any info would be appreciated. It is about 8 1/2 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches wide across top of vase.

Your jardinier's 'not for food' statement indicates 1980s or later, high-lead glaze. These are mass-made factory items widely exported to sell in department stores or even 'Chinatown' type shops. Many had the 'not for food' warning only on stickers.

More lead was used in glaze to lower melting point to make production cheaper (use less fuel or electricity for kiln heat). Result is also soft and scratches easy, so if you wash do not use dishwasher, hand wash gently.

Good luck,
Cal

This is a modern vase most likely made in China. It has decorative value only.
