Subject:Identification Help Please
Posted By: Margaret Albrecht Sat, Feb 14, 2009 IP: 98.170.213.187

I have a rather unusual request for help..........

I saw these two figures on a television show and couldn't get over them. I would love to be able to get something like them for my home. The thing is I don't know what they are or where they're from. They look Asian to me. I've checked museum sites and on-line galleries without finding anything similar, but -- as you know -- Asian art is a huge area covering so many different styles and time periods.

In my search I found this site and I'm hoping that someone here knows what they are or at least recognizes the style / country of origin.

I've taken screencaps of them. Unfortunately I could only get an image of the front of the first figure, but I've got the second figure from multiple angles. Being screencaps they're somewhat fuzzy, but you can still get the sense of them.

I had to shrink some of the images to meet this board's limit of 600 pixels in width and 500 pixels in height. If you want to view the larger image please go to the link I included.

I really do hope that you can tell me something about the figures. Thank you for at least looking.

Margaret

I posted the initial request almost two months ago. I just wanted to update that I've since been informed that the first figure was possibly based on (as it's obviously a modern copy) a circa 12 century Balinese statue.

I'll admit to being surprised that no one here recognized that.

Margaret,

You had advantage of seeing object.

What you post not well lit or in focus.

Good luck,
Cal

Sorry for the delay in the reply. The message that there had been a reply went to my Spam folder.

Did you read my original post? I made it clear they were from a TV show I saw. So just how do you think I have seen the object(s)?

Because I've never seen the objects. Nor did the person who identified the first figure. The only thing we've seen was EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAW: the images off the TV show. The person who identified the piece identified it from the exact same image I posted here.

I'm puzzled as to what part of my OP wasn't clear about the origin. How did you think I "had the advantage of seeing the object"? Did you think I had magically transported myself to the studio set (and the show is no longer being filmed so the set doesn't even exist) in order to see the figures and take bad photos of them?

An identification of an object is directly related to the clarity/focus/quality of the picture taken. You post crappy images and expect people to know what the heck the item is!?!? The quality of images you have shown are on par with the images taken of the elusive bigfoot.

Many readers of the board are not from the US and do not have English as their first language. Try conversing in a foreign language on any board and see for yourself if it's so easy. So either learn to calm down a little and treat other people with respect or if you can't, take your arrogant attitude and get lost. Your outburst to Cal who is a long time poster is completely unwarranted. Posters to this board are all volunteers with many diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise who try to help others with similar interests. They owe you nothing.

And on a side note, since the person that identified the figure based on these low quality images.... how do you know they are correct?

Bravo, PyroManiac, I concur with you.

All of the members here give their opinions for free and very often we did not even receive a small thank after spending our precious time in researching them. That is why I no longer attempt to translate some difficult Chinese scrolls.

Bill
