Subject:Sgraffito Vase
Posted By: tony bonn Tue, Mar 03, 2009 IP: 72.145.254.54

I believe that i have a sgraffito vase of sinuous inverted tapering form having sporadic coin medallions of polychrome floral and whimsical motifs all over vase. The vase opens with a slight collar rim.

The lovely blue ground is ever so faintly impressed with swirling brush hair decoration.

The underside has a very small rounded foot along with a chianlong seal script reign mark in red. vase stands 11".

I would appreciate any help on the identification of age and description of the vase. the form seems too daring for a late ching work although many pieces of that period are of excellent quality.

Does look like a late Qing to early Republic perios piece. However I think the vase is missing it's top! Is there any exposed body on the top edge of the rim that is not glazed over?

the top rim is glazed which is one reason i maintain that the vase is not missing any pieces. the inside is glazed as well. the only part not glazed is the small rounded foot rim.

please let me know what causes you to think that it is late qing. i have no interest one way or the other regarding its age as its quality is reasonably good regardless.
