Subject:Help identifying this pottery
Posted By: Mike Haynes Thu, Mar 05, 2009 IP: 68.115.152.78

My mother has had this pitcher for years, and it origonally belonged to my grandfather who came into ownership of it sometime during World War II. None of us know anything about it, but it does have a marking on the side which we believe might be chinese. I am trying to find help with identification of this piece. I am including 2 screenshots and a link to a video we uploaded to you-tube for you to look at. any help you might be able to give will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Mike Haynes

Dear Mike,
("For the records" .......)

I.m.h.o. this is not Chinese but Japanese. This ware is called Sumida pottery witch was made from early 1900's on. Hard for me to give a narrower dating and I can't help you with a translation as well. Hopes this helps a bit.

best regards,
Arjan

I think I wrote early 1800's. That must be late 1800's....

The sealmark bears the name of Inoue Ryosai. In fact there were 3 of them (father, son and grandson).
Inoue Ryosai-I was the inventer of the Sumida style and started production around 1890.

regards,
Arjan
