Subject:Gold inlaid glass pendant.
Posted By: David Qwerty Thu, Jun 11, 2009 IP: 82.31.203.143

Can anyone help with this pendant? It appears to be gold inlaid onto glass or crystal It is foiled behind the glass. A tiger hunting scene I think of quite some age. Please let me know if you have any information about origins , date..
Many thanks

David

Likely stamped brass fixed with shellac - note brown around edge.

Green foil, picture on clear glass, not indicate 'age'. Decoration not well done combination Indo-Persian hunting scene and 'animal style' of much earlier. Combination styles suggest much much later product.

Guess tourist item about middle to last quarter 20th century.

Good luck,
Cal

This type of Indian work is called "thewa". It is gold foil on glass, typically green, but in recent times and remakes also in fancy other colours. The ancient technique is known only to a few families in Parthabgar in Rajasthan, it started in the late 18th century. The Rajput were closely related to the Moghuls, hence Persian scenes, particularly hunting, but also Hindu idols and symbols. Real old pieces are rare and expensive. For more information see Oppi Untracht's book "Traditional jewelry of India" p. 300 with pictures and a description of the making process. A photo less close-up would be very helpful for further information.
