Subject:How to sell antiquities
Posted By: Jon Wed, Jun 24, 2009 IP: 69.39.27.37

Hello! My mother is trying to sell some of her rare asian antiquities and has asked me to help her, among them are 3 beautifully carved Chinese figures that date to as late as the 1850s with the largest standing about 10.5" tall. they appear to be some type of bone, I have never seen anything like them. She claims they are quite rare and probably worth at least $5K each--so without paying a small fortune for an appraisal, does anyone know who deals in and/or buys such type of items or who I can contact? I do have pictures and am going to post just one of all three of them here. Thanks for any info!

1) These may be antiques (nothing can be seen in your tiny photo) but not "antiquities".

2) Do research on law regulating such sale in location of items; they may be ivory.

3) Consult auction houses regularly handle oriental arts, are 3 well known ones that have web sites you can contact through.

Good luck,
Cal

Many auction houses will give a verbal appraisal from pictures by email. Look for a house with a good Asian art dept. Of course, they hope you will auction the pieces with them

Cheers,
Stan
