Subject:Eastern Jin jar with iron spots.
Posted By: phil Mon, Jun 29, 2009 IP: 203.218.46.24

Hi,
I thought some members of this board might have comments or other examples of this type of early Yue ware which I believe dates from the Eastern Jin period, 4th-5th century.

As I`ve more than 3 pics you might find interesting I`ll add some more in the next post.

All the best,
Phil.

Hi Phil,
I was delighted to see your beautiful 4th-century Eastern Jin Yue ware jar with iron spots. How big is this jar? Do you have other Yue wares in your collection?
Best wishes,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I nearly missed seeing your message, it was a long while ago that I posted this jar & I must admit to being slightly surprised that it aroused no interest at the time as this type of early Yue jar seems to be quite rare. There is a slightly smaller, fairly similar example in He Li`s book "Chinese ceramics, new standard guide", in fact the same jar is also shown in Margaret Medley`s excellent book "the Chinese potter"
The dimensions of this jar are height 4 3/4", (12cm) & diameter appx 5 1/4", (13.5cm) Due to financial difficulties I`ve had to downsize my collection quite a lot over the last year or two, really just keeping the best, (IMO) pieces so this is the only early Yue piece I have at the moment but I do hope to be in a position to start collecting again soon.

Anyhow I`m glad someone else noticed this & also finds it interesting.

All the best,
Phil.
