Hello to Forum, Can anyone read the script and the seal? thanking you in advance.Paul

Paul, the top image is at the limits of my eyesight but appears to contain a cyclical date of possibly the summer of the wu wu year, which last rolled around in 1906 and 1966. The calligraphy but not the seal in the bottom picture is legible. On the right is another cyclical date, this time for the start of winter (tenth lunar month) in the geng shen year, which came by in 1908 and 1968. In pinyin this line reads "geng shen chu dong." The other line reads "xi hua lou zhu ren' (Literally "the Master of the Flower-lover's Building," or perhaps "the Manager of the Greenhouse")

the calligraphy is touching and surely that is nto a modern stuff.

Hi to all,these are the two pictures that compliment the scripts,they are I believe in gongbi style but I don't know the artists names,I would be grateful if anyone could give me further information to add to Bill's well received translation. Cheers Paul.

thanks for posting this larger photo. the cyclical date is noted above but is meaningless for practical purposes due to the information in the rest of the inscription, which claims that the work is by "shi fu", a nickname belonging to Ming dynasty painter Qiu Ying. The seals are also "Qiu's" seals. However in fact this is a modern (no earlier than the 1980s I'd think) decorative painting, not by Qiu, whose work this does not resemble. A number of Qiu's finest works are in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, and there are a number of his landscapes in a blue and green palette in various other museum collections elsewhere.

Hi Rat, thanks for your information, do you mean the picture with the single column of script or both the pictures ? it looks as if they were painted by the same artist anyway, It appears that it could have been the work of a budding student, as I bought them a couple of weeks ago from a boot sale for �4.00 each, which for the money they are worth it to me .they are quite good don't ya think? thanks again Paul.

Sorry Paul, I'm referring to the painting with the single column of characters. the other one is by a different artist, and likely the actual painter.

Hi Ra,thanks for the the further info, I will post a closer image of the seal with the double script that Bill kindly translated if anyone could recognise,or read it.your dating of the 1980's could extend back to the later of the cyclical datings that Bill translated could'nt they, do you have any clues as to why you have put a 1980's date on these pictures.
