Subject:Print information

Hi, any information about these prints is much appreciated. We have a about 20 of these that we've had for about 60 years. We'd really like to know who the artists are. I personally think all of them are beautiful. There are also several prints of birds I believe by some of artists in the list.

Thanks very much. - Alice

You will want appraisal in-person by one who knows Japanese prints well. Famous auction houses can do it.

Pictures of portions of the pieces, framed or behind mats, do not tell whole story.

Important factors are if they have been trimmed, details of publisher and censor seals, condition of paper (folds? stains?), degree of faded color.

Some prints have been reprinted or reproduced (some many times) or have accepted 'states' or editions. Some reproduction sizes are not same as originals, so description details important.

Good luck,
Cal

Thank you Cal - very interesting points that I would not have thought of. I know little about auction houses however (Los Angeles) so will need to do some research. Thanks again. - Alice

The first is by Kunisada and is earlier than 1844.

The 2nd is by Utamaro. Given the good condition, I suspect it is a later printing from recarved blocks. I would have to find a known original and do a comparison.

The 3rd I think is Torii Kiyomine but would need a better picture of the signature.

I don't have the time at present to do any research to provide more detailed information but this gives you a start.

Cheers,
Stan

Thanks very much for taking a look and for the info Stan. It sounds like I will have them looked at in person. Looking forward to it once I figure out who to take them to. Thanks again. - Alice.
