Subject:Print ID help request
Posted By: KEL Sat, Jul 25, 2009 IP: 12.200.197.130 Any help to ID this interesting work would be welcome. I feel that I've seen it on a certain well known antique show, but other than that I'm at a loss. The extraordinarily fine detail and pigment used is especially striking. Size (in frame) is approx 10" x 15". I haven't removed it from the frame yet. |

Posted By: Marc Kahn Mon, Jul 27, 2009 Your print was designed by Bakufu Ohno, published by Shinagawa/Kyoto Hanga-in. It is listed on page 31 of the 1953 publisher's catalog which you can see at http://www.koitsu.com/Research/Catalogs/KHI/Catalog_C/Catalog_C.htm |

Posted By: KEL Tue, Jul 28, 2009 I suspected woodblock, but I would probably never have found it on my own since my expertise is in other fields. The link you posted has aroused my interest in this area. |

Subject:follow up
Posted By: KEL Wed, Jul 29, 2009 Update: just in case anyone is interested, I finally removed the print in question from the frame in order to store it in acid-free paper, and at that time I got pics of the stamps from the lower left border. I've posted the stamp images below in case anyone is interested. Any comments on them are welcome. I was pleased to see that the borders were not trimmed, the stamps were present, and aging appears to be minimal. I'm new to woodblock prints, but learning (hopefully). |

Posted By: Guy Pepermans Thu, Jul 30, 2009 The cartouche at the base read "hori Kikuta" (carved by Kikuta) so assume this must be Kikuta Kojiro, a Shin Hanga block cutter. |

Posted By: KEL Fri, Jul 31, 2009 Very interesting indeed. I'll try to find more info on him as well, now that I have that information. I've been searching online for photos of the artist himself (alas, with no luck). I wish I had time to learn to read Japanese as it intrigues me. Thanks for your help. |

Posted By: KEL Sun, Aug 02, 2009 I hope this post isn't a duplicate as I tried to respond earlier. Anyway, many thanks Guy on the cartouche ID. Very interesting stuff indeed. |
