Subject:Thai temple scene raised
Posted By: John McGlade Sat, Dec 19, 2009 IP: 74.45.30.17

I have what i believe is a thai temple scene. It is 5.5 feet by 2.5 feet. It is not a rubbing. It is raised looks like rice paper mache. There are a few water stains and 1 or 2 small holes in it. I would like more information on the scene and a value for it. Thank You for any help.

Dear John

It's a wood fiber paper (Kra dard sa) made in the Northern Thailand, not rice paper. It's a scene of Churning the Ocean of Milk.

Read the story:-

Possibly a tourist souvenir from Thailand, rubbing from newly carved wood, because the real thing in Khmer Temples in Thailand and Cambodia are big, the small one are at the gables on the top of the doors, no one can climb up to patch wood fiber paper and rub charcoal pencil on them.

The style is of Thai folk art and handicraft.

Have fun
Anita

Dear John

Your picture have raised up because it was pumped up from 2 molds. Not actually rubbed from temple wall.

Wood fiber paper in Thailand has various thickness, and it is flexible, hard to be torn, and last longer than rice paper. We used it for making umbrella with wood resin / lacquer paint on it, it can stand rain water very well.

Have fun
Anita
