Subject:What kind of wood is this?
Posted By: Tim Mon, Dec 28, 2009 IP: 76.108.108.213

I have a large and old Chinese two part cabinet that has very beautiful wood, but it appears that in some areas the wood has been refinished.

Does anyone know what type of wood it is?

I've photographed the top of the base cabinet with and without flash, and one of the lower cabinet doors, so you can see the natural/original color AND how irridescent the wood appears to be. Notice that the carved door is much more red than the rest of the piece. Do you think that is original?

If it is refinished, should I have the 're-finish' removed back to the original wood?

Also, the piece is constructed with NO NAILS and there are areas where the joints in the wood have begun to seperate - is there an easy way to reglue/rejoin these separations?

I will be adding more photos to the link tomorrow when I can photograph the entire piece in better light.

Thanks.

This is a nice display cabinet in Fine Suzhou craftmanship from fist half of 20th century. It is made from various of Huali wood. It was original stained for the dark Shuanji looks.

Thank you for the great information! I bought it at a local thrift store with hopes of selling it. I put it up on Ebay with a starting bid of only $500....I hope it sells.

Why are you calling it Huanghuali wood in your ebay posting? God is watching you.

By the way...I've changed the listing by removing any mention of the type of wood being Huanghuali.
