Subject:tapestry origin question
Posted By: Alice Mon, Jan 11, 2010 IP: 99.191.74.107

This tapestry was purchased in NY approx 50 years ago.

As the attached photo shows, it is in need of restoration. Because it is 5 ft x 6 ft I would really like to have someone come in and look at it (Los Angeles) who can tell me what it might cost to have it restored and what its origins might be. If there any suggestions I'd really appreciate it. Thank you. - Alice

Tapestry is woven-in design made on loom. Except in slit-tapestry (which this is not), the design-making threads go all the way across piece -- perhaps can be seen going all across back, or closely interwoven in fabric.

If is embroidery (design threads mainly local-area in piece and go any different directions; possibly several types stitches, such as look like chain), do not call tapestry.

Good luck,
Cal

Dear Alice

Picture is too small.

It's Java (Indonesia) art, possibly a batik with scene of Ramayana.

Have fun
Anita

Hi Cal,

I don't know what I was thinking when I said it was a tapestry (it is my mother's and she died a few weeks ago so I'm still trying to recover). I believe this is painted on a paper-like material. I grew up with this piece and on some level would like to donate it so that it can be displayed if anyone's interested but would like to know what it is first. (Indonesian, Balinese?). I tried looking for similar pieces on the internet and know I've seen characters like these in museums but don't know where to begin (which is why I posted to the forum.)

Thank you again for your observations and again sorry for the tapestry reference. - Alice

Whatever is the technique, origin and style are most probably a theme of the Ramayana from Bali or Java

Dear Alice,

I just saw your posting. It is a Balinese Painting from the Kamasan Style. Could you tell me if the material is smooth and woven (more like a cloth) or it looks like "uneven" paper.
