Subject:Rock Buddha?
Posted By: Doug Colosio Thu, Jan 14, 2010 IP: 70.212.243.70

Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows perhaps what material this is made from? Any information at all would be greatly appreciated and hoped for. :)

Thanks,

Doug

This looks like a very soft stone.. soapstone.

Probably soapstone / steatite, judging by the way it broke when it was dropped.

Since it is a soft stone (though can be hardened by heating) it is easily carved by electrical rotary cutting and grinding wheels. Very commonly used for decorative trinket items and household figurines. Search forum for above names and 'Hotei' and you find other examples.

Good luck,
Cal

Something tells me that these are Tagua Nut carvings.

This is my favorite one I own. I don't think it is mass produced, but now days it's hard to tell, I have bought swords that look rusted and found out they were new and made to look old!
This one is real gold on the bronze (I have a tester).. Anyways, if you have an idea of the age of it, that would be great!
