Subject:Netsukes - 7 Lucky Gods - need help w/ Artist
Posted By: Tim Sun, Jan 17, 2010 IP: 76.108.108.213

Here's a link to the photos of the netsukes....

How do I clean them?

Two are signed - Can someone help with identifying the artist?

Is this a true set or a collection of several different artists?

How old are they?

Thanks.

This is easy.. plant ivory = Tagua Nut. They are modern, made in China.

I apologize for my photos - I think the black background washed out the images.

I'm familiar with Tagua nut - it doesn't have the same luster or grain of ivory.

I believe the new photos (same link as earlier)shows the color/grain much better.

I am interested in knowing if the new photos change your opinion.
Thanks.

Yes, they did, I see some ivory grain on some.

I'm not an expert but here is my guess.

It looks like at least some of them are made of ivory. Based on the mediocre quality of the carving, the lack of patina, and other factors, I'd guess they are mid 20th century. There are two different signatures meaning at least two artists were involved.

Let's see what others say.

Cheers,
Stan

This mahjong site might be helpful. It is a thorough summary concerning the testing of ivory. sloperama.com/mjfaq/ivory.htm

Thanks for the link...very helpful.
There are wavy & cross hatch translucent lines on all the pieces, so they all appear to be ivory.

I appreciate the help.
