Subject:Questions about Satsuma Vase
Posted By: Bruce Sun, Jan 24, 2010 IP: 68.17.198.11

This 12" Satsuma vase has been in my family since at least 1955. My father obtained it in New York in trade as a furrier. Can anyone give me any information in regards to its possible age, read the mark, or estimate a value?

Anywhere from 1910-1930,value,15-20 upwards depending on what a collector is willing to pay and depending on the maker, will have to work on the mark,Keith.

I can't help with values but the writing on the bottom says 'Seizan'. I believe there was at least one Kyoto artist using this mark on Satsuma and other painted stoneware during the late Meiji era (1868-1912). This vase looks to be a later product, perhaps a decade before World War II or a decade after the occupation of Japan ended in 1954. It lacks Satsuma markings, so this vase would usually be referred to as Kyoto ware made of Satsuma type stoneware.
Best regards,
Bill H.
