Subject:Identify pair of Asian watercolors?
Posted By: lori Tue, Feb 16, 2010 IP: 74.105.229.170

I am trying to find information on a pair of watercolors with either Japanese of Chinese signatures/stamps.

The image sizes are 14.5 inches by 9.0 inches (sight).
They appear to be watercolors and each bears a seal or stamp in the corners.

There is also a series of stamps beneath the frame, outside the brown field of the paper.

Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

My apologies.

For some reason the link to which I've uploaded the images did not appear in the original message.

Please go to:

Hi Lori,

These are in fact Japanese woodblock prints by the artist Wada Sanzo (1883-1963), published by Kyoto Hanga-in depicting the Seven Gods of Luck (Shichifukujin).
The print at the left depicts 3 Gods: Bishamonten, Jurojin and Hotei; the second print shows Benzaiten (Benten), Daikoku, Ebisu and Fukurokuju.

I recommend that you remove both prints from their frames and store them in a map of acid neutral paper or have them reframed in a professional manner.

Guy.

japanese woodblock prints, originally printed in Kyoto; someone else will be able to tell if these are first printing or reprints, and more details about the publisher and artist.
