Subject:Nephrite Jade and Chlorine swimming pools
Posted By: Sunny Mon, Mar 29, 2010 IP: 70.122.88.107

Hello,

This looks like a knowledgable group for my concerned question.

I have been given a lovely Maori Manaia of green Nephrite Jade from New Zealand, that I have been told never to remove, ever, until I am ready to pass it on to someone else. The giver told me that it was OK to go swimming while wearing this, but I am still concerned.

I swim in a chlorinated pool for 1 hour every day of the week. Will all this chlorine harm my beautiful pendant? If so, how can I protect it from the chlorine without taking it off?

Thank you,
Sunny

Like any stone, you can put it into any sort of water. If you can survive the chlorine, so will the Jade. What it does to the cord is another matter, or is it on a gold chain?

Your question presumes the color of the jade to be natural, which your trust in the source would strongly suggest is the case. If it isn't, which wouldn't necessarily indicate knowledge on the part of the giver, then clorine probably would fade the pendant. I've used bleach before to test jade color, and the method certainly separates the wheat from the chaff.
Best regards,
Bill H.
