Subject:help identifying this vase
Posted By: Al Thu, Apr 01, 2010 IP: 74.190.243.223

Hello, I am new here. I pick up pieces from time to time and found this one to be a neat and interesting one. It is a bit dirty and has been neglected, & has minimal markings on the bottom. the inside appears that it was hand glazed as parts were not covered completly and the blemishes show from inside out. The exterior has some raised portions to ad demention.
Any info anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Al,

Welcome on the site.
Maybe as a start....
The decoration didn't directly rang a bell to me(the grapes looks to fit on an European painting) but I think your vase is Japanese and it looks like a kind of Satsuma looking ware. (Is the glaze crackled?).Your vase was part of a set because the first mark reads "right". Right(or left) is often followed by a number to fit the right ones together(from the same decorator)In this case it could be number 10 with a stroke under it but I'm not sure of that. I can't give you a better guess for a dating then 20th. century. Maybe others can.

Regards,

Arjan

That stroke should be one of course. So that makes "Right eleven" ....

As noted, the top character means right and the bottom two add up to eleven. Such markings were applied at the factory for quality control purposes, in this case probably to ensure that a mirror-image pair was correctly juxtaposed and situated on the right size stands.

The decoration on this vase suggests it might have been made around the Art Nouveau period (circa 1890-1910) to compete with European vases in world markets.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks so much for the info that you have provided. I hope that I have the vase turned corrctly so the marks are readable.

Arjan, the only place the glazing is cracked is where the leaves and the gold Viens in the leaves are, it appears that it was a hand painted piece. you can see small inperfections in the vase body itself much like old glass in home built in the same time period.

i will attach are somore pics
