Subject:Wenshu? or Monju?

I recent dug out a limestone statue of Manjusri, seated on a lotus throne atop a shishi, from where it had been buried in the attic of a summer house.. It is well carved of a rather muddy brownish-grey fine-grained limestone. What might one look for to distinguish a piece done in Japan from a Chinese example, or ascertain the age? I always believed the piece to be Chinese, and believe a pre-Ming age is likely. As soon as I can figure out how to download some image files I shall do so. Are any views particularly diagnostic of age or origin? Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome.

Michael
