Subject:Stone Reclinging Feline
Posted By: Kevin Martin Sat, May 15, 2010 IP: 74.77.20.251

I posted this again on this message board just in case some one read this board and not the forum.
I need help trying to identify the style of this cat.
If anyone recognizes the style please tell me.
I you think it is junk...please tell me ( :
I just can't put my finger on it. It was sold to me as Han, but I really don't know.
Thank you

Kevin, I can't tell you anything else about it, but I'm fairly confident the feline is supposed to be a tiger.
Good luck,
Bill H.

I thought it may be a tiger or a lioness. The only problem with the tiger theory is that it was pointed out to me by a friend of mine that it does not have stripes. Most Chinese representations of tigers have stripes.
Maybe it is not Chinese.
Any thoughts on the material ?
Thanks for your reply.

FYI, one thing China has never had is lions, whose range doesn't extend past the Himalayas if memory serves. I have no idea what the material might be.
Best regards,
Bill H.

You say that this is made from stone...it looks very brittle (cracks), and it could have been poured, or it had acid etc.treatments. It sure does not look old to me !

I am not making any claims here as far as age ( :
It did pass your scratch test. The needle left no mark.
I was hoping that someone would at the least recognize the style so that I could go from there.
You may be right, it may be acid treated.
If it were poured, would it still pass the needle test ?
The other thing that the pics don't show, is that it is covered with scratch lines that are the same color as the rest of the piece. Perchance root marks ? I'm trying not to got out on a limb here ( no pun intended ) ( :
Thanks for your opinion, it is greatly valued.

Therefore it did not pass the scratch test. You have to push the needle just enough to get a white or black 2-3 mm line. Protect your eyes !

I thought I posted this earlier.
The scratch test left marks that looked like pencil lines.
I was wrong in the last post when I wrote that no scratches were left.
Thank you

Do you have a few more images of this, particularly from the bottom? I doesn't look like stone at all to me, (I have never seen stone crack in that manner) more like something fired or some kind of earthenware.

I just looked at this cat/dog or whatever it is, which looks very similar and is also being presented as Han.

Whats the brown substance seen on the surface? Is this soil?

The brown color on this piece is not dirt.
I don't think it is a fired piece because I cannot scratch it with a needle. It leaves a black mark. The needle is unable to dig into the piece. Upon further reading I believe that the the surface material on the needle is coming off on the piece.
Here are a couple of more pics.
Thanks for your help

Roger,

I associate that brown substance with fakes. It is usually adhered in a manner that it is not easily removed. It is used to make the object look old and previously buried.

Cheers,
Stan

If you mean like that junk on ebay, I have to say that this is different. Do you have any sample pics of what you are referring to ?
I do appreciate your input.
Thanks
