Subject:Porcelain Parrot Cup ??
Posted By: Darrell Thu, May 20, 2010 IP: 125.27.32.121

What I can find, this appears to be 14th to 15th century Vietnamese cosmetics bowl. Any thoughts or history/period/value/fake or information sincerely appreciated.

Both pieces appear to be from the Cham Island (Hoi An) shipwreck, but there are many fakes around. The shops in Manila, for instance, are full of fakes. Better photos are necessary.

The blue and white bowl is from a highly respected Singapore dealer, the polychrome from the Vietnamese government sanctioned auction.

Hi Darrell,

I spoke with a friend in Manilla this morning. He said that the parrot bowls can be had there for as little as ₱400, less than $10US. The fake bowls (actually brush washers) are probably from Indonesia. Be very sure that you know what you are getting before buying one of these.

Best, Walt
