Appreciate help translating mark impressed on bottom of ceramic monkey figure. Chinese or Japanese? Is this a modern figure?

Hello Debbie,

Your monkey is Japanese and the mark reads Kutani. I must admit that I never saw such a ( Kutani) piece before. Thats the reason I'm thinking it's a rather modern piece. But we'll see if there are other opinions.
