Subject:japanese 19C cup ...satsuma?
Posted By: richard t Fri, May 28, 2010 IP: 123.3.87.236

hi, i'd welcome any help with ID for this small cup. it's part of a set that my grandmother acquired in japan around 1900.

http://home.iprimus.com.au/mkhulu65/jpt..htm

i have a few leftover pieces, most have been lost or broken over time. the detail is extremely fine.

i'd also like to know if it's worth getting an appraisal or are they fairly ordinary pieces.

Hello Richard,

Yes and no..........

Your very nice lidded pot is Japanese indeed but not Satsuma (Satsuma is crackled earthenware) but Kutani porcelain. The right row of Characters reads "Kaga no kuni" wich means it was made in Kaga han wich is nowdays called Kanazawa. When your grandmother bought the piece it was probably new so we can date it to the Meiji period.

Regards,

Arjan
