Subject:Help with marks on vase
Posted By: Jannis Mon, Jun 14, 2010 IP: 96.13.75.193

I'd appreciate any help on identifying the marks on this vase. I hope the image is clear enough to view - if not I will try to shoot it again.

I have a photo of this vase with my great-grandmother. I would place the photo in the period of 1905-1920. The vase is beautifully decorated with raised embellishment. I'd love to know more about its origins.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Jannis,

It looks like 'Dai Nippon Kinkozan' (Great Japan Kinkozan). Kinkozan was a studio active in Kyoto circa the late 19th and into the early 20th century. This isn't a typical Kinkozan mark so may be one of their latter-day pieces.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill H. and Jannis,

As far as I know the Kinkozan factory closed in 1927. The addition of DAI to Nippon is commenly accepted as being (mosty)of the Meiji period. As You (Bill) noted this isn't a typical (the later ones often have a mountain picture in the mark) Kinkozan mark but I have the feeling that it is in fact a Meiji piece. So my question is; is there another reading possible? (another zan or yama)

Regards,

Arjan

Hi Jannis and Arjan,

I sort of doubt that anyone would put those particular characters on the bottom of a Satsuma-type stoneware vase unless they wanted them read as Kinkozan, but anything's possible, especially with all the fakes around.

Actually there's nothing out of kilter about the vase vis-a-vis styles prevailing during much of the late Meiji-Taisho period, or first quarter of the 20th century. This six-character mark of Kinkozan in black is what looks strange to me.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I've seen a few with this black mark, it is a legit Kinkozan mark. My guess would be 1890-1910. This type of design was popular from 1880's up to the 1920's.
