Subject:Help with identifying an ancient seal
Posted By: Quatio Wed, Jun 23, 2010 IP: 206.227.160.12

This is a dark 4x2 Jade Seal. 2 Chinese's Art Antique experts said that the seal does not seems to be Chinese. Can somebody out there look at the art and the scripts from the seal and tell me the origin of it?

Bad news.. this item is new, and the stone
has been artificially "aged". A scratch test
will reveal if it is Jade. Use a strong needle,
and scratch a 2-3 mm line on a sound area
of this stone..
If it is white, you got a Serpentine carving.
.Make sure to exert enough pressure so that
you get a white or black colored scratch.

The good news is: it looks like your seal was made of dark green nephrite jade.

The bad news:

It is neither OLD or antique, it is MODERN, probably made in China, with the intention of selling it as archaic or Neolithic jade seal to unsuspected "collectors". Both its material and carving quality are inferior and wrong. The style and carving of its seal scripts are equally wrong and horrible. In short, there is simply no point to interpret it. Sorry.

I hope you did not pay too much for it, if you did, you may want to consider returning it for a refund. I am surprised your two "experts" could not tell you what it is or they might not want to hurt your feeling.

B
