Subject:Identifying the Chinese painter of the late 1800's
Posted By: Mikhael Fri, Jul 16, 2010 IP: 94.137.204.90

Dear experts,
Could you please possibly identify the author of this painting? I actually saw it here: http://www.printfection.com/zengarden/Chinese-Brush-Painting-Eagle-T-shirt/_s_235561
The page's author can't name the artist but says the painting is of the late 1800's. I'm very curious about it. Unfortunately I couldn't find the image in a higher quality...
Thank you very much!
With best regards,
Mikhael

Hi Mikhael, Unfortunately I can't see the signature clearly when the image is magnified but I suspect this is a painting done recently. However, it is based upon the works of Lin Liang, a painter in this style of the Ming Dynasty. More recently Qi Baishi has painted eagles in this style, as well as his popular student Li Kuchan, who subsequently developed his own typical style of bird. If you search for images of these painters you will I'm sure find a few that are of even better quality than the T-shirt image you have found.

Thank you very much for this information! I searched for these artists' images but unfortunately I didn't find this particular thing. Sometimes tineye.com helps (reverse image search) but in this case it didn't...

Really? I just did a quick google search and found eagle paintings by each of these artists. remember to click on the "images" option when you are useing google to search. There's a pair of eagles by Lin Liang in the Metropolitan museum (you can search their collection directly if you want), as well as a Qi Baishi eagle also at the MMA, and lots of Li Kuchan eagles.

Oh yes, there are many eagles painted by these artists - I mean, I didn't find this particular painting among them. Still thanks a lot - I found some other great eagles :)
