hi

does anyone know where this little wooden buddha is from? also, about how old? and finally, do you think it was originally on a base but has now been cut off? seems so small.

any help most appreciated.

thanks

Hi Richard,

This is a South East Asia statue, probably Laos, and is around 100 years old.

Small ones are very common in temples, see picture i took in Vientiane.

Have a nice day

hi

thanks a million for the information and great photo !

i see most of the little buddhas have square bases, so i am assuming my piece must have had a base at some time.

i notice too that the small pieces are displayed in pairs. is there a reason for this? i am really interested in buddhist art but totally new to the topic. i will be in cambodia next month and hope to see these pieces in their original setting.

regards
rt

Hi Richard,

Sorry, I don't know why they are in couple ....
Yes these have a rather tall base, but some don't . I don't think yours had a tall base, it should still be there if it had one, because they are sculpted in 1 piece.
That's also the reason i said " probably Laos" , I can't exclude Burma/Myanmar for that reason.

Well , lucky you going to Cambodia. I bought a Buddha sculpture when I was there a few years ago. It is about 30cm high and around 400 years old. (see photo)
Hope you can find similar ones.

You will see that the hat and the face features are different from 1 S/E Asia country to another.

Best regards.
