Subject:2 ornate gold gilded cups with lids any information apprecited
Posted By: Kathy Clark Thu, Sep 16, 2010 IP: 69.19.48.224

I bought these 2 cups at an auction. One has a repaired lid, the other perfect. Any information you might have would be so welcome. Thank you. Kathy

the 2nd photo is upside down.
the pronunciation should be 'ku tani tou san'
(from the upper right, bottom right, upper left, bottom left.)

Hello Kathy,

In case you didn't know allready; Your cups are Japanese.
Before, I wrote many times (to keep it simple) that Satsuma is a kind of crackled earthenware and Kutani is porcelain. Here you can see a crackled surface with a mark (= upside down) that reads "Kutani Tozan".
I couldn't find a simular mark from one of the Tozan Ito's (1, 2 and 3) so my guess is that it's a product of the "new" kiln of the Tozan studio that was build in 1920 near Kyoto.

Regards,

Arjan
