Posted By: Bill H Sat, Sep 18, 2010 After repeated staring sessions with these seal carving characters (my frequent 'bete noir'), I get the feeling that the first stamp is the first character in the written signature (meaning mountain peak) and the second stamp may be the second character (meaning moon). I think I'll give up seal writing on my next list of new years resolutions. :) |

Posted By: Guy Mon, Sep 20, 2010 I can recommend the book "Pictorial Chinese-Japanese Characters: a new and fascinating method to learn ideographs" by Vaccari & Enko. Still easily available a dealing with this subject matter in a clear and comprehensive way. |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Sep 17, 2010 Presuming this to be a Japanese view of Mt. Fuji, the bold characters above the first stamp can be read either as 'Hogetsu' or 'Mitsuki' (names). I can't make out the first seal-writing character on the righthand side of the top stamp, although the second one is 'yama' or 'zan' (mountain). The bottom stamp is pronounced 'in' and means 'seal' or 'stamp'. It'll take our Japanese experts to tell you more. |
