Subject:Need Asian Art Appraiser
Posted By: Marsh Sat, Sep 18, 2010 IP: 99.108.148.205

My mother and I have brought a few pieces (Chinese pottery, Japanese vases & stirrups, Japanese prints, etc.) to the Asian Art Museum. We are seriously considering donating (the museum has expressed interest), but want to get appraisals first to establish value (mainly for tax purposes). Any recommendations on good appraisers for Asian art in the SF Bay Area who aren't going to charge an arm and a leg? Please feel free to add any advice/comments/watchouts/etc. THANKS!

Try a major auction house (Sotheby's, Christie's, Bonhams). They often do verbal appraisals for free in the hope that you'll sell through them. They charge for written appraisals for insurance purposes.

Cheers,
Stan

Try Cynthia Shaver who also has a gallery on this site.

She is in Belvedere and is a member of the American Society of Appraisers and specializes in Japanese.

She may be the answer to your problem.

Good Luck w/ the Asian!
