Subject:Identification and any information - old Asian art
Posted By: Pat Thu, Oct 07, 2010 IP: 72.66.197.46

Hi,
I recently attend the estate auction of an antique dealer and won the bid on a carton of convex frames. To my surprise, this piece of art was sandwiched between two frames. I would love to know more about it. I thought it was a watercolor on silk while my son, a fine artist, thinks it might be a block print. All I do know, or think I know, is it was framed by Kaufmanns of Pittsburgh (label on back)(defunct department store). I know its old because it is a single digit zip code.
Can anyone help with origin, signature, medium, etc. Many thanks.

The single-digit US postal zone went out in early 1960s. Framing could well have been in 1950s. That is old to you?

Antique is officially 100-years old. Most-wanted by connoisseurs Chinese painting is from Song and Yuan dynasties (10th to 14th centuries, 600 to 1000-year old).

Good luck,
Cal

Pat,

This is a fairly poor copy (on cloth) of a Japanese woodblock print by Hiroshige. The original is from his famous Hoeido Edition of the "53 Stations of the Tokaido Road" printed in the early 1830s. It is the Futagawa station.

As Cal said, it is not very old.

See the link below for the original.

Cheers,
Stan

URL Title :Futagawa

I'm impressed that you can tell all that from the photo!
As for old, you are correct, especially in terms of Asian art.
Many thanks to you both for your assistance.
